“Bodysong” is a group exhibition by David Buchler who is a South African artist based in Japan and KZN based artists Wesley Flanagan, Modisa Tim Motsomi and Wayne Reddiar. The exhibition explores various dimensions of the human body, as it relates to space, history, geography, mythology and narrative. The artists have produced works in media as diverse as painting, photography, installation, sound art and video art.

A group exhibition for smartphone camera images

Taking pictures with a smartphone (or a cellphone that has a camera) has become so popular, it even has its own name: iPhoneography, or smartphoneography for those who do not own an Apple mobile phone. Users have been taking a lot of cool pix on their phones and now would like others to see them besides on Instagram and other sites and have a chance to sell them in a gallery environment.
All of the works fit the format of 12cm x 12cm wooden blocks onto which the image(s) is mounted. The sale price of each block is set at R100 each.

artSPACE durban's Annual Affordable Art Show is one of our most popular exhibitions since it's inception 9 years ago. We manage to collect and select a wide range of fine art keeping the prices down. The maximum sale price is R3 500 this year. This year we have 75 participating artists exhibiting a variety of medium from oil paintings, ceramics, sculptures, prints, photographs, and more. What makes this exhibition a bit different is that when you buy a work you may take it with you!

Thisis an invitation to partake in this exciting project.

You have been taking a lot of coolpix on your phone and now would like others to see them besides on Instagram and other sites and have achance to sell them in a gallery environment. Now is the time!

Wewant this exhibition to be of extremely high quality, creativity andoriginality. Use of applications and computer editing is encouraged! Whatever you do, just have fun!

Toenter the exhibition you will need to make works that fit the format of 12cm x12cm wooden blocks onto which the image(s) you will mount. These blocks are the entry fee for the exhibition and will cost R20 per block. If you are unsure of how to get the imagesready and onto the blocks we will have instructions at the gallery when youpick up your block(s).

Youmay buy more than one block and enter more than one work. We encourage you to makethis your showcase and thus use a number of blocks to create an individualtheme or installation. The cost for 10blocks is R150 and for 20 blocks is R250.

In addition, the gallery will charge acommission on sales of 20%, which is well below our regular rate. The saleprice of each block is set at R100 each.

Pleasepick up the blocks from artSPACE durban or the COLLECTIVE from the 10^thJanuary. Delivery of the finished works,which must be ready for hanging, is by 2nd February during gallery hours.

Forty international artists join forces in ‘Letters from the Sky’, an international experimental film festival for COP17.

In the coming weeks, the globe’s attention will be focused on Durban, South Africa, where world leaders will converge to discuss the most pressing matter of our time - climate change - at COP17.

Launching on the 28^th November and running until early 2012, experimental film festival, ‘Letters From the Sky’, will take to our screens as part of the COPART Cultural Action. The festival, curated by Cape Town based Kai Lossgott, will showcase a series of film messages from artists and filmmakers from all over the world. The artists were briefed to present personal responses to the effects of climate change on their communities, families and lives.

The festival has been supported by the British Council as well as the City of Cape Town’s Climate Smart Programme.

The exhibition brings together 32 invited artists who eachpresent one work interpreting what is an extremely difficult, thought provokingand exciting subject matter.

In the run up to this exhibition the two galleries organizedevening sessions, In Session.End.Part 1, 2, and 3 on this subject matter inwhich religious leaders, environmentalists, philosophers, physicists,mathematicians (to name a few) were given the opportunity to give their take onit.

The artists who have accepted the invitation to thisexhibition have had to consider and develop not only a very abstract andtechnical matter but also a very personal and emotional one and are now facedwith the challenge and burden to consciously present them to the public. Eachwork is displayed with the artist's statement about the work.

In this exhibition Terri Broll explores the way in which the juxtaposition of images without a socially predictable order can invite a deeper exploration of the relationship between self and other and the fantasy that connects them. Oil, wax and photo collage are used to produce an image with both layering and ambiguity.

The focus of Celia Sidler's work is the aesthetics and influences of the food and publicity industries. The effects of globalisation on local markets and the role of publicity in influencing consumption are ever-present in her projects, which typically involve found objects. Whilst in South Africa, she will focus mostly on new inspirations drawn from her encounters with new people, food, animals, and material objects.

For the opening Sidler has organised an Indian family, who will cook mealies, so everybody is invited to come and to eat. It’s also one part of her show, it belongs to it, so it's not just an opening meal, it is an action.

It will be the first opportunity for the public to view works presented by these 3 artists together in one exhibition. With familiar elements in each work, Migration will present a story of a physical, spiritual and historical journey.

"CUT" by Robert S. Bolter 8 - 27 August 2011

Bolter’s art is autobiographical, biographical and metaphorical for
deliberate or accidental cutting. It can be representative of
microscopic neural imaging, or the abstraction of his universe. It
remains true to abstraction in that it is very subjective and can be
positive or negative for the viewer. Cutting is not always
perfect, especially when perfection is what you are aiming for with a
cut. You can approach a perfect image or state and can get something
different and improved on what you intended.

Bolter works thickly in oil paints, because of its organic nature which runs
though the work, creating a relief that he then, once dried, cuts with a
fillet blade, exposing shapes, layers and colour. The use of the
technique of cutting is reflective of the accidental, purposeful,
harmful and healing nature of a cut.

"Playoff" by Lance Friedlande and Gordon Froud 18 July - 6 August 2011

The exhibition PLAYOFF calibrates the individuality of the creative process, highlighting similarities and differences between the activities practiced by both artists to produce their work. Similarities include: using creativity to resolve self generated problems, the use of words to stimulate content, an evolutionary process in the method, and the practice of setting up an ongoing dialogue between the artist and the work which influences the outline. Also important for both artists is finding joy in the creative activity resulting at times in playfulness in the process as well as in the completed artwork.

In spite of these and other process similarities, the works of the two artists remain very different and offer a duality or Play-off against each other that makes the exhibition work well as an interesting two person show. This exhibition has travelled from Potchefstroom University to Oliewenhuis Museum in Bloemfontein, will be shown at artSPACE durban before finishing its run at the Pretoria Art Museum from October to December 2011.

'Onthaal Onthul' is both an invitation to a function/reception/celebration (onthaal) as well as the artist revealing (onthul) critical aspects of this function/reception/celebration the audience is attending. The artist provides analogies and conceptual frameworks by using tea-serving utensils to represent and address various social conducts, concerns and conforms.

The exhibition forms part of her Masters studies in Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology, where she applied an auto/ethnographic and living theories study under the supervision of Professor Joan Conolly and co-supervision of Bronwen Vaughn-Evans.

Naretha Pretorius is currently the vice principal at Vega School of Brand Innovation in Durban where she oversees the academic and quality assurance of the campus as well as lectures the Honours in Brand Leadership students their research module.

The “Anatomy of the Un-seen” is an exploration into the notion that the unseen can manifest in the physical. The internal “soul” of a person never goes un-seen, posture, muscle development, voice tenure, expression in the eyes etc. are some of the physical traits that describe the un-seen. This notion strongly resides in the portrait, bewitching in its potential to hold emotion.

The exhibition showcases a selection of faces that provided Kotze with strong clues into the un-seen. More specifically, they were faces that held true to her emotional state at the time of producing the works.

Kotze has known some of the subjects all her life while others she has only met a few times. Each has touched her through their physical selves which reveal what they hold close. The “Anatomy of the Un-seen” is a tribute to the subjects, the courageous nature of the human spirit and its captivating physical self.

A group of KwaZulu-Natal-based artists met on December 9th at the Durban Art Gallery archives with the formidable task to find the one artwork that was most inspirational to each of them. At the end of the day twenty-five artists came away with twenty-five images that have now become their foundations of a new artwork. There were no restrictions as to the subject matter chosen nor are there any restrictions as to the interpretations. The exhibition will showcase both images of the original artworks and the interpretations.

artSPACE durban is launching its first Annual Art Book Swap on the 11th October 2010. The Swap will run from Monday, October 11^th at 10:00 a.m. and will continue until Saturday November 27th at 1:00 p.m.

The Art Book Swap is going to be a great reason to go through one's library and de-clutter the books that are no longer wanted or needed. Then bring those books to artSPACE durban and find new and other interesting books.

The Swap will and should be fun.

There are a few simple rules.

1. This is a swap: books cannot be bought or sold for money.

2. All books will be categorized in three categories: up to R50 = 1 point, R50 to R150 = 2 points, R150 and over = 3 points.

3. As you bring your books into artSPACE durban you will end up with a total number of points and which establishes your "buying power".

4. You may bring in more books and swap at any time during the swap period adding to or reducing your points.

5. We will only accept books in good and clean condition.

6. The only cost involved is our administrative charge of R5 per point on taking books out. No charge to bring books in, of course.

7. All points expire worthless on the closing date Saturday November 27th at 1:00 p.m.

8. All books not swapped at that time will be donated to local schools.

So, de-clutter and refresh your library. If nothing else for a short time you also have reduced the "to be dusted" space. And of course, swapping is healthy for your credit card and the environment!

An exhibition of characters and places in a unique mix of woodcut prints and the blocks they are made from.

Originally from Durban, Jeff has exhibited widely since 1976 and is represented in numerous public and private collections. In 2009 he made the move from full-time arts educator to establish the Albatross Studio next to his home on the southern edge of the Wild Coast. Now able to commit more time and focus to his own studio work, he also offers private classes and workshops in printmaking, drawing and related areas.

Landscapes, probably more than any other visual objects, remains a vital source of inspiration since every person, whether consciously or subconsciously, lives in a constant relationship with his or her environment.

Participating artists were invited to explore through the creative use of video any themes related to the geography, landscape and environment and to present their representations and feelings around the "environment-human-being-nature" theme.

The works express a deep appreciation for nature and its splendours and also reflect fears that these beauties may become degraded.

The objective of the exhibition was on the one hand to stimulate and encourage artists to use their abilities to formulate original and imaginative images with the help of video technology, and on the other hand, invite the viewer to savour the range of moods that landscapes evoke in the heart.

Included in the DVD is Georgia Papageorge’s magnificent

Africa Rifting - Lines of Fire, Namibia / Brazil,

video images of two grand installations inspired by a voyage commencing in Namibia in June 2001 and climaxing in Torres, Southern Brazil, on 11 September 2001.
